Davis Benton is a commercial photographer living in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He graduated with an associate's degree in professional photography in 2018. During his time in school he won several awards at the Professional Photographer's of Iowa print competition. At the end of his time in school his portfolio was selected as the top commercial portfolio as well as top portfolio overall in his class. After graduating Davis began working as a freelance photo editor and commercial assistant. He would batch edit photos for several different local wedding photographers. He also had the opportunity to work as an assistant for two different local commercial photographers. He assisted in studios and on location. In March of this year Davis accepted a job offer and moved across the country to be a full-time product photographer for a major online retailer. His time there was b extremely beneficial and helped him improve and expand on his skills. He photographed basic product images for e-commerce with a focus on quality of lighting and detail over quantity. He also staged images to show the products in use. This meant he was able to use and improve his skills in product, beverage, lifestyle and food photography. Davis took a personality test when he was hired on at Webstaurant. The results of the test said that he has the "perfectionist" personality type which is an excellent description of who he is as a photographer. He absolutely loves finding every little minor flaw in an image even when the task seems very tedious. Davis' biggest strength as a photographer is his skill level in photographic lighting. Another major strength is his understanding of composition. He has professional level skills in Photoshop, Lightroom and Capture One. Photography is Davis' passion and he loves using his creativity and technical skills to produce high quality imagery.

Qu'est-ce que vous aimez dans votre métier ?

I see high quality photography as a series of good decisions. I love being on set and building up an image to where you envisioned it, then picking it apart changing small thing after small thing until it's the best it can be in camera. Then comes the opportunity to increase the quality even more with the use of photo editing and retouching.

With food and beverage photography there is nothing more rewarding to me than when someone sees an image of mine and they say it makes them hungry or thirsty. Product photography is one of my favorite things to do because the lighting can be very complex at the highest level. I love using different types of modifiers and white cards to put together the puzzle of lighting a product.

Quels types de séances avez-vous réalisés et comment les avez-vous rendus spéciaux ?

I have done beverage, food, product and lifestyle shoots. During my second month at Webstaurant store I had the idea to use an area of our warehouse to shoot because we would have more room. My boss thought it was a great idea and installed a fake bar to use as a background. The first shoot I had in that area I had to stage these big heat lamps similar to what you would see at a buffet with someone cutting and serving meat. There were a few different challenges with this shoot but I'm extremely happy with where it ended up. I was able to set up a believable background and balance the light of the heatlamps with the strobes.
