More about Austin J....
What do you love about your job?
I love sharing moments. One of my favorite phrases is, "A point of view is meant to be shared," which I feel connects wholeheartedly with me in relation to photography, as a profession, a hobby, and as a part of my identity. I love the opportunity to shed light on ideas, new and old, and discover unique ways to convey them through my photography. I love stepping out of the box with my work, whether that be using panty hoes over my lens or photographing inside of a glass pitcher. I love exploring new ways to capture moments.
What types of shoots have you done and how did you make them special?
I have done mainly stylized editorial shoots for artists/musicians and publications, as well as bringing personal ideas to life. I feel that, especially in editorial work, location and props as well as styling are what really sets different shoots a part from each other. I like to really break out of the mold when it comes to color schemes (i.e. lighting, paints, color powders, etc). as well as with props to really create a world inside of the photo. Also, placement is very important to me when it comes to creating drama in photos. More dramatic placements of subjects, props, etc. create for very unique moments in photography, especially editorial photography in my opinion.
Awards, honors, and recognitions received
I have had self portraits featured in the Kresge Gallery at Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas, I have been published in Vogue Italia, and in 2019 I was contracted to photograph the cover of the inaugural publication of Surj Magazine, a small publication based in Florida.
A fun fact about this photographer
I studied French in college, and am bilingual! While my French is a little rough as I don't get to practice it as much, I try and keep up with it as much as I can. This has turned into my phone, TV, and GPS all being in the language of French.
