Dave is a freelance photographer based in Plymouth covering the South-West of the UK. Covering Weddings, Events and photoshoots. He prefers to work with a full range of photography subjects and people allowing for a more varied work life.

He recently left the Royal Marines to make photography his full time occupation after serving 10 years in the MOD. With the intent to transfer as photographer in the Royal Navy, he was utilised as an Unofficial photographer using all of his own equipment. He quickly learnt to adapt to every situation and welcomed the challenge by covering Sport, high ranked / VIP visits, portraiture, Christmas balls, regimental events, field combat exercises and yes, you guessed it, weddings.

All of this along side his love for just getting out and about to take photos of local towns, coastal areas, churches, mountains, animals and many other subjects that again, has made him a very adaptive photographer.

More about David B....

What do you love about your job?

I love that everyday is different, everyone is their own person and has their own requests for me to adapt to. I love to capture those special moments. I believe if you’re doing the same photography work everyday, you loose your creativity and fall into routine. You miss thinking out of the box. I’m friendly, professional and treat everyone with respect which I’ve always found to be returned. And what better way to progress in my own business as these personality traits directly reflect my workflow and achievements.

What types of shoots have you done and how did you make them special?

Children are always special to photograph. Capturing their many facial expressions and dramatic body language. And what better way to do this then to ask a toddler to speak about his or her favourite subject!

Awards, honors, and recognitions received

I’ve never entered any competitions for my photography or as individual images. That should be a fun fact really… When I was starting out, I obviously scoped out the competition and I quickly realised that every single photographer was an “award winning” or “best in”. Paying to enter competitions in multiple companies to display these is not what I’m about. I find the whole ordeal of award collecting to be very off-putting.
I went on a course during my last year in the marines to find that I already knew everything except a day’s worth of teaching regarding lighting studio equipment. To that end I’ve choose not to go on courses again. Believe it or not, I’m a lovely person. I’m just straight up and honest about myself.

A fun fact about this photographer

For the most part I self-taught in photography.
Royal Marines Commando for 10 years.
Can walk about on my hands like a natural thing to do.
