Video is very different with many "tricks" to improve an image. Photography is similar, but there is so much more control to capture something important. I love the idea of getting more than one shot at a setup, event, or product. The control is what draws me toward different types of photography. The more random one discipline of photography is, the more respect that I have for those who thrive in it.

More about James P....

What do you love about your job?

The gear is a lot of fun. Pushing HDR to extreme saturation and contrast is very satisfying. Making little light combinations, grip arms, and foam-board backgrounds for products in my garage are fun. I tinker a lot. The thought of not knowing what goes on behind the camera makes me feel like a magic trick.

What types of shoots have you done and how did you make them special?

My favorite shoot had to be a dental office in which the team wanted some simple photos of them in their uniforms posing at the office. I diplomatically convinced them to try something different. There was a calendar on their break room wall. Sundays were circled with win-loss record. Turns out, they played softball at a field on those days for team building. I shot photos of them and their kids getting dirty and having fun. Those made such a difference and allowed their patients to see them as people rather than sterile professionals.

Awards, honors, and recognitions received

No recognition, but many positive reviews.

A fun fact about this photographer

I love fishing, bowling, and smoking brisket. Social media is a plague and should be treated like addictive behavior.
