Linda has been a photographer for 25 years, working for 20 years as a staff photojournalist at The Philadelphia Inquirer. She was part of a great newspaper: a creative, dedicated community of people with diverse gifts. It was her job to deliver news that could inform and invigorate its audience. She now uses that experience and expertise in her freelance work for clients as wide ranging as academic institutions, non-profits, and major corporations. In her work, she looks for answers, ways of seeing and thinking, to complete the job in a way that meets the client's goals and supports that client's vision. Like all art, photography provides a pathway to human connection. Linda approaches her assignments as a visual means of helping clients reach immediate and long term goals, whether they are sharing the joy of a much-anticipated engagement, or celebrating a new product line, or fundraising for a cause. The larger picture goal, always, is to help us all make better and more lasting connections.

More about Linda J....

What do you love about your job?

I have been shooting and editing for almost three decades, and have never lost the thrill of actually seeing a moment unfold or realizing that I have made the 'perfect' image. An editor of mine once said, 'the great shots are easy.' He was right: the perfect image finds YOU. That said, preparing for the shoot--preparing to make that 'perfect' image-- is imperative: I love bringing ideas to the job, I love the ideas my clients bring to the job, and I enjoy collaborating to create a Whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. It's a team effort, whether it is an event, or a portrait shoot.

What types of shoots have you done and how did you make them special?

I have done everything from straight news photography to portraits to weddings. The best way I know of to make a shoot special is simply spending as much time as I can to get to know my clients. My experience as a photojournalist have trained me to suss out the core of a story, or the key to a relationship in very short order. If, in a family shoot, or a wedding, there are special participants beyond the central, i.e., a family matriarch or patriarch, I make it a point to watch the interactions among the family, and honor those relationships as best I can. If it is a theater shoot, I make sure that I understand the play as well as the theater company who is producing it. If I am shooting an event for a non-profit, I research the history and purpose and goals of the organization before the shoot. I make it a point to know the key players. If any of that organizations clients are at the event--and in many cases they are-- I make it a point to determine if those clients can be photographed. If I can photograph them, those shots make for a special moment in these special events. Portraits are very special because they demand a collaboration and a trust. The client and I work to determine positioning, lighting, mood. Once we agree on how to start, and where to go, the path forward becomes a really nice conversation.

A fun fact about this photographer

I have taken jazz piano lessons for ten years. I have a degree in web design. I have run the New York Marathon twice (and decided that was enough).
