'Code is material for design': Figma announces new code layers at Config 2026
Figma unveiled new coding, animation and AI features at its Config 2026 conference in San Francisco, including code layers, native motion support, generative plugins and AI agent upgrades.
Figma on Wednesday unveiled new coding, animation and AI features for its design software, deepening its push to make the platform a shared workspace for designers and developers.
The updates, announced at the company's Config 2026 conference in San Francisco, California, include code layers, generative plugins, shader support and motion animation tools built into Figma's collaborative canvas.
"Code is not the opposite of design. Code is material for design," CEO Dylan Field said.
The code layers feature lets teams bring software repositories and code flows into Figma for testing, while also turning design layers into interactive code elements.
Figma also introduced native motion support for animations, transitions and 3D transforms, reducing the need for designers to use outside tools before handing work to developers.
Other updates include Figma's Weave AI workflow, generative plugins, shader tools and upgrades to its AI agent, which can build reusable skills from text prompts and connect to outside services including Notion, GitHub and Microsoft Excel.
The announcements build on Figma's efforts to expand beyond design into software development workflows, following integrations last year with Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex.
