Steinberger Appears Unannounced

The day's most unexpected moment came when Peter Steinberger, creator of the open-source AI agent OpenClaw and head of OpenAI's Personal Agents division, walked onstage without prior announcement.

Steinberger released OpenClaw in late 2025 as a locally run AI agent that connects to messaging apps including Signal, Telegram and WhatsApp. The project grew from 30,000 to more than 295,000 GitHub stars within months. OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman hired Steinberger in February and said the project would move into an independent open-source foundation.

His recent speaking engagements have focused on the limits of fully autonomous software pipelines, a theme central to this week's "software factories" conference program.

The AI Engineer World's Fair continues through Thursday, July 2, at Moscone West in San Francisco. Main-stage sessions are available free on YouTube.
