camera Canon EOS 700D (Rebel T5i)

Patti started out in the art department at PAPER MAGAZINE in the early 90's and could not have had a better education in street art than that! She was and still is super influenced by graffiti, street photography and the energy of the then underground scene of skating and b-boying. You can find traces of these influences in a lot of her photographs. Going from graphic design to photography has been a seamless transition. Having extensive knowledge of the print process and retouching is a big help in post-production and just adds another level of expertise to what she offers when shooting. Patti recently fell in love with food photography and has been honing her skills in this space for the past 3 years.

How did you get started with photography

From a young age I developed a passion for photography, probably from when my late grandmother gave me her refurbished film camera as a birthday present. As a teenager I was very much into movie making, would always love seeing the "making of" documentaries of movies, was always the guy with a video camera on school and family trips. Once I became an adult, still photography became equally a passion. Each new camera I got was an upgrade on the last - from a super small "point & shoot" at a young age, to my first Canon Powershot, to my first Canon DSLR, and now my focus, equipment wise, is building up a collection of beautiful lenses. I use all L series Canon lenses and have recently acquired one of the most beautiful portrait lenses, the Sigma 85mm 1.4 art lens.

What do you love about your job?

The true joy in photography for me, is actually nothing do to with the camera or technicals. Its about the pleasure in bringing someone happiness. Seeing the joy someone gets in seeing themselves in a way they've never before seen, finding new confidence, seeing their own beauty, seeing someone achieve their goals or dreams with their new photos, is really the true satisfaction.

What are some of your favorite places in New York City to take photographs?

In New York, one of my favorite places to shoot is the Bethesda Terrace. The diffused light, colors and background textures there are unbelievable. I love shooting on a rooftop when possible, for a real "New York" look. The Soho streetscape and buildings make for some really hip backgrounds in photos, especially when blurred out. Shooting down on Riverside drive is one of my recent favorite spots. There are some real hidden gems there - street corners, blocks, where theres no trees or cars in view, and some beautiful colors for the background!
